My name is Ella Fagerhaug, and I have been involved in the Teen Leadership Academy (TLA) since I first became eligible. This incredible opportunity is offered through 4-H and brings together members from counties across the region. Through TLA, participants gain firsthand exposure to a wide range of businesses and operations, expanding their understanding of different industries and career paths. One of the most memorable experiences for me was touring Jack Link’s facility. To end the year, the participants go on a mystery trip which is a fun and engaging way to celebrate all we’ve accomplished together.
Becoming a part of TLA involves a simple but important process. First, you must be an active 4-H member. Then, you'll complete a brief application that includes questions about your interest in the program and what you hope to gain from the experience.
One of my favorite aspects of TLA is the individual project component. For the past few years, I’ve organized a breakaway roping jackpot event. This year, I challenged myself to take it even further by securing additional sponsorships. I successfully raised $1,500 in added money and plan to donate 10% of the entry fees to the Wessington Springs Blue Bag Program.
Overall, the Teen Leadership Academy is a unique and enriching program that provides meaningful opportunities for growth, learning, and leadership. I highly recommend TLA to anyone looking to explore future career interests, develop leadership skills, and experience new things.
