Dear Kristi and crew, This is Melanie Haddorff Phelps. I used to enjoy this newspaper at my sister’s (Kay Haddorff Buchheim) in Sioux Falls. We’d discuss what was going on in Springs and watch for family names our parents knew, and that Kay remembered from growing up there.
Our dad was Leonard Haddorff, and in the fifties, he was the water meter man for Springs. I had the idea that he owned the town pool!
One of my favorite editions of your paper is the annual library report. My parents started their courting after dad saw mama sitting on the cement block bench at the top of the steps and asked her “Margaret, may I walk you home?” That was the beginning of a long and happy marriage for them, and a wondrous childhood for my brothers, sisters and me.
Sincerely, Melanie Haddorff Phelps Petaluma, CA
