Jackson and Jayden Eggleston, known as “The Twins,” captured the state championship in Mario Kart on Feb. 14, defeating Brookings High School’s team “JHAM” to claim the title.
The championship marks a milestone for the Wolsey-Wessington Esports program after the duo finished second at state last year.
“I’m incredibly proud of how our team competed this season,” said coach Haley Asimakopoulos, Wolsey-Wessington Esports coach. “Jackson and Jayden Eggleston put in a lot of time practicing after finishing second last year, and to see that work pay off with a state championship was really special.”
According to Asimakopoulos, the twins logged more than 350 hours playing Mario Kart in preparation for the season.
“That dedication was evident,” she said.
Connor Beals and Jeven Zerfoss also represented Wolsey-Wessington in chess for the second consecutive year and continue to show improvement, Asimakopoulos said.
“It’s exciting to see our esports program growing and competing at a high level, especially against much larger schools,” she added.
