Spartans, Warbirds Send Strong Contingent to State Track Meet

Athletes from Wessington Springs and Wolsey-Wessington will be well represented at the South Dakota Class B State Track and Field Championships this week, qualifying competitors in a wide range of individual and relay events at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

Between the two schools, local athletes earned state berths in sprints, distance races, hurdles, relays and field events, giving both programs opportunities to compete for medals and team points throughout the three-day meet.

Wessington Springs 

The Spartans qualified athletes in both boys and girls competition, led by a strong relay contingent.

On the girls side, Anna Arhart earned a state berth in the shot put with a qualifying throw of 35 feet, 3.5 inches. Kenzie Kolousek qualified individually in the 400-meter dash (58.81) and 800-meter run (2:25.45).

Wessington Springs also qualified girls relay teams in the 1600 sprint medley relay (4:33.14) and 4x400 relay (4:23.08).

For the boys, Carson Finn qualified in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 1 inch during the season. Logan Mebius advanced in the 800-meter run with a seed time of 2:02.08.

The Spartans also qualified relay teams in the boys 1600 sprint medley relay (3:44.24), 4x200 relay (1:35.97), 4x400 relay (3:36.74) and 4x800 relay (8:46.18).

Wolsey-Wessington 

The Warbirds qualified competitors across nearly every area of the meet, with especially strong representation in field events and relays.

Senior Sawyer Nelson qualified in three boys events, earning state berths in the javelin (1389), 110-meter hurdles (16.93) and 300-meter hurdles (44.05).

Josiah Malone qualified in both the long jump (20-2½) and high jump (5-10), while Ryder Jensen advanced in the discus with a throw of 131-8. Caleb Richmond qualified in the 400-meter dash (54.63), and Wyatt Koester earned a berth in the boys 800-meter run (2:09.12).

The Warbirds also qualified boys relay teams in the 1600 sprint medley relay (3:49.89), 4x200 relay (1:36.28) and 4x400 relay (3:41.89).

On the girls side, Kendal Uttecht qualified in three events, including the 800-meter run (2:21.25), 1600-meter run (5:27.85) and javelin (114-5). Shae Uttecht also advanced in the javelin with a throw of 114-5.

Wolsey-Wessington will have three competitors in the girls pole vault. Timber Haeder enters with a qualifying height of 7-4, Marley Boomsma cleared 8-4 and Peyton Schnabel qualified at 10-4.

The Warbirds also qualified girls relay teams in the 1600 sprint medley relay (4:22.08), 4x200 relay (1:51.72) and 4x400 relay (4:19.36).

State Meet Begins Thursday 

Competition begins Thursday at Howard Wood Field and continues through Saturday. Athletes will compete against the top Class B qualifiers from across South Dakota in pursuit of state medals and podium finishes.
