On the heels of the first meet of the season in Yankton the week before, the Spartans hosted a varsity meet at home last Wednesday with 70 golfers in attendance and much success for the home team with the following results:
• 1st - Blake Larson
• 2nd - Brock Krueger
• 7th - Heyns Bothma
• 8th - JD Thompson
• 1st - Boys Team
• 5th - Kirstie Munsen
• 10th - Taylor Braun With 23 kids total on the team -- 10 junior high and 13 high school -- Head Golf Coach Regina Teveldal said the schedule has changed quite a bit due to tumultuous early spring weather.
“A lot were canceled right off the bat and we had to change things around. Gettysburg and Highmore can’t even get on their course,” she said. “We are fortunate we can have meets here, our course is in good shape.”
Teveldal, who leads the golf program with the help of volunteer Assistant Coach Brian Amick said that the team is a diverse mix.
“ We have lots of newbies this year who have never swung a club and returning players who are very competitive and spend a lot of extra time on the course,” she explained. “For some of these meets, I could take six varsity players but there is such a diversity of talent they will be competing for those spots.”
Next up was Platte on Tuesday and looking ahead this week, two consecutive home meets: junior high and JV Wednesday and Varsity on Thursday.
