Junior High Spartans Take First in Big Slam Basketball Tournament

The Wessington Springs Junior High Basketball team brought home some hasty hardware over the weekend, winning first place in the Big Slam Basketball Tournament held in Iroquois on January 25, 2025.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Coach Jeff Argo, in his third year of coaching the junior high Spartans. “We are on a seven-game winning streak. We beat Woonsocket that previous Friday.

At the tournament, the middle schoolers won all four games: Highmore-Harrold (29-27 in overtime,) De Smet (27-25), Iroquois (32-7) and Hitchcock Tulare (35-27).

“They did a good job — they played four games in four hours. That’s a lot to ask and do as well as they did,” he said.

Halfway through the season now, Argo said all the boys play very good defense.

“The last couple years I never worried about defense but things are just clicking this year,” Argo pointed out. “ We are playing very well as a team defensively and offensively. It makes life a lot easier when they play that hard together.”

Next up the Spartans face off against Iroquois, followed by Wolsey, Chamberlain, Kimball/ White Lake and JVC.

The Spartans host a tournament on February 22 and Coach Argo invites the community to take in some junior high basketball. Look for times and further details about the tournament in upcoming editions of the True Dakotan.
