On Thursday, January 5, the Spartans girls basketball team defeated Sunshine Bible Academy by a score of 52-10. The Spartans got off to a good start and led 22-2 after one quarter of play. The Spartans continued to build the lead in second quarter, outscoring SBA 16-5 and taking a commanding 38-7 lead into halftime. The Spartans went mainly to the bench in the second half to complete the 52-10 victory. Avery Orth and Kirstie Munsen led, scoring with 15 points apiece. Orth also had 10 rebounds and Munsen eight rebounds.
On Friday, January 6, the Spartans hosted Ethan and were defeated by a score of 56-27. The Spartans started well and had a lead of 7-5 early, but then Ethan got heated up from outside and the Spartans started to turn the ball over. Ethan led 2211 after one quarter of play. The Spartans continued to struggle offensively in the second quarter and Ethan held a 36-14 lead going into halftime. The Spartans were able to tighten up the defense in the third quarter but still had a hard time with turnovers and scoring. Ethan outscored the Spartans 20-13 in the second half to secure the 56-27 victory over the Spartans. Kate Havlik led the Spartans with 11 points while Avery Orth and Kirstie Munsen each scored eight points.
On Saturday, January 7, the Spartans girls basketball team traveled to Mitchell Christian (MC) for a make up game from December. It took a little bit for Spartans to get the offense going, but they did prevent Mitchell Christian from scoring and the Spartans led 14-4 after one quarter of play. The second quarter was even in scoring as each team scored 13 points and the score was 27-17 at halftime in favor of the Spartans. To start the third quarter, the Spartans picked up the intensity and outscored Mitchell Christian 20-5 to take a 47-22 lead into the fourth quarter. The bench mainly played the fourth quarter outscoring MC 12-8 to complete the 59-30 victory.
Next action for the Spartans will be in the 281 Conference tournament. The first round of the tournament for girls is Friday, January 13 at Wolsey. The Spartan girls are the #3 seed and will play Iroquois/Lake Preston at 8 p.m.
