Wessington Springs, 59 Iroquois/Lake Preston, 49
Last Tuesday the Wessington Springs Spartans hosted Iroquois/ Lake Preston in a doubleheader.
In the girls game, the Spartans defeated Iroquois/Lake Preston by a score of 59-49. The Spartans got off to a hot start and took a 2214 lead after one quarter of play.
However, I/LP mounted a strong comeback in the 2nd quarter as the Spartans went cold from the field and I/LP held a 29-27 lead at halftime.
The beginning of the 3rd quarter went back and forth until late in the quarter when the Spartans were able to finally take the lead back late in the quarter and led 44-42 going into final quarter. In the 4th quarter, the Spartans used a strong defense and were able to pull out the 59-49 victory. Avery Orth had 17 points and nine rebounds. Carissa Scheel had 16 points. Raylee Fagerhaug drained three three point shots for her nine points. Alyssa Grohs had seven points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Wessington Springs, 49 Lower Brule, 42
On Thursday the Spartans traveled to Lower Brule and the Spartans girls were able to earn a hard fought 49-42 victory. The first quarter was low scoring and went back and forth and the Spartans led 11-9 after one quarter of play.
The 2nd quarter was much of the same with the Spartans outscoring Lower Brule 12-11 to hold a 23-20 lead at halftime.
The Spartans had a strong 3rd quarter and built a 10 point lead until Lower Brule made a couple of baskets right at end of the quarter to make the score 38-33 going into final quarter of play. Again in the 4th quarter the Spartans built a 10 point lead and ended with the 4942 win. Avery Orth had 17 points and seven rebounds. Carissa Scheel had nine points and five rebounds. Kerstyn Heim had eight points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had four points, five assists and 11 rebounds.
Wessington Springs,57 Tripp-Delmont/Armour, 28
The Spartans traveled to Armour on Saturday to take on Tripp-Delmont/Armour and the Spartans came away with a dominant 57-28 victory. Even though the Spartans got off to a slow start offensively, their strong defense allowed the Spartans to lead 10-5 after one quarter of play.
The Spartans widened the lead in the 2nd quarter by outscoring TDA 14-3 and lead 24-8 going into halftime. The start of the 3rd quarter went back and forth but the Spartans were eventually able to outscore TDA 18-11 to hold a 42-19 lead after 3 quarters. The Spartans outscored TDA 15-9 in the 4th for the 57-28 victory. Avery Orth had a big game with 26 points and seven rebounds. Carissa Scheel had 11 points and five rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had five points, six assists, and five rebounds. The win puts the Spartans record at 13-3 on the season.
This coming Thursday, February 8 the Wessington Springs Spartans girls will be hosting Warner, who is 16-1 on the season. It will be a great late season match up between two of the top teams in Class B girls basketball.
