Spartans Battle Heat, Wind, and Dust to Earn 3rd for Girls, Championship Title for Boys at 281 Conference Meet

The Spartans traveled to Huron on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, to participate in the 281 Conference Track & Field Meet. With the temps rising and the winds blowing even stronger, we sought shade under the big cottonwood tree on the NE corner of the complex. Added to that, the dust and dirt from the construction to their school. Despite Mother Nature trying to get the upper hand, the Spartans stayed focused on their goals, both on the track and in the field.

It was the field events that started the Spartans off strong. Anna Arhart threw 36’ 0.50” in shot put and 94’ 10” in discus to land her in 3rd place in both events. Makynna Heim threw 25’ 5.75” for a PR in shot put and 54’1 0” in discus. Ashlyn Weber cleared 3’ 11” in high jump and throwing javelin were Makynna 65’ 5”; Lily Roesler, 63’ 8”; and Kerstynn Heim 60’0”.

On the track, the 2-mile relay of Kendall Kolousek, Ella Kolousek, Kerstynn Heim, and Alexis Roesler ran 2:09.77 for 5th place. Bailey Yost ran 17.98 for 4th place in the 100m hurdles. Also running the hurdles were Selah Havlik, 21.13; Roslyn Klein, 22.57; and Aunnika Heumiller ran 22.58. Brooke Mohling ran 14.66 and Celia Garcia ran 16.92 in the 100m dash. Abby Yost was unable to start due to leg injury. The 800m relay of Kenzie Kolousek, Kendall Kolousek, Bailey Yost, Mariah Messmer ran 1:57.133 for 3rd place. Ella Kolousek ran 7:06.52 for 7th place in the mile run. Masynn Mebius ran the mile in 7:36.94. The 400m relay of Roslyn Klein, Selah Havlik, Lily Roesler, Aunnika Heumiller in 1:02.80 for 4th place.

Kenzie Kolousek ran 1:04.46 for 3rd place, Logan Mohling ran 1:05.73 for 4th place, and Ashlyn Weber ran 1:14.05 in the 400m dash. Bailey Yost ran 55.55 for 2nd place, Selah Havlik ran 58.94 for 4th place, Aunnika Heumiller 1:00.27 for 5th place, and Roslyn Klein ran 1:09.87 in the 300m hurdles. The medley relay of Brooke Mohling, Ashlyn Weber, Mariah Messmer, and Kendall Kolousek ran 5:17.72 for 6th place. Kenzie Kolousek ran 2:43.89 was 2nd and Kerstynn Heim ran 3:09.69 for 8th place and Lily Roesler ran 3:22.01 in the 800m run.

Running in the 200m dash were Mariah Messmer who ran 29.01 for 3rd place, Logan 30.30, Brooke 32.94, and Celia Garcia 37.85. We had two runners in the 2-mile run, Masynn Mebius was 4th in 17:12.22 and Ella Kolousek was 5th in 17:29.60. Alexis Roesler was unable to compete due to a hip injury. The mile relay of Logan Mohling, Kenzie Kolousek, Kendall Kolousek, and Mariah Messmer ran 4:24.11 for 2nd place.

The combined efforts of the girl’s team totaled 97 points for the highest finish in 281 conference of 3rd place.

The field event results from the boys really set the team up for success from the start. In shot put we had Grady Gran throw 40’ 8.5” to land in 2nd place, Robbie Hine threw 36’ 5”, and Wyatt Arhart threw 28’ 3”. In discus Robbie Hine threw 115’ 8” for 3rd place, Grady threw 95’ 1”, and Wyatt threw 64’ 8”. In javelin, Nathan Gaikowski threw 132’ 1” for 2nd place, Wes Molnar threw 118’ 10” for 7th place and Robbie Hine threw 90’0”. Grayson Finn jumped 13’ 7.5” in long jump. Colby Flowers went 33’ 9” in triple jump for 8th place. The boys went 1st, 3rd, and 4th over the high jump bar. Ryder Michalek went for the school record at 4’ 4.25” but didn’t get it this time. He won the meet clearing 6’ 3”. Carson Finn and Colby Flowers both cleared 5’ 11” with Carson getting 3rd and Colby 4th.

On the track, the 2-mile relay was 1st in 9:27.53 with Richard, Carson, Sam, and Karter. Colby was 2nd in the 110m Hurdles in 18.81. Hayes Havlik ran 11.97 for 5th in the 100m dash, Ryder ran 12.23, and Grayson ran 14.19. The 800m relay of Hayes, Nathan, Sam, and Will Grohs ran 1:38.86 for 1st place. Sutten Jensen ran 5:42 for 7th place in the mile run and Kohen Mebius ran the mile in 5:57.36. The 400m relay of Hayes, Wesley Molnar, Ranick Fjerstad, Ryder Michalek ran 49.75 for 2nd place. Karter Mebius won the 400m dash in 53.22 and Richard Cardona ran 58.47. Colby Flowers ran 48.43 in the 300m hurdles for 7th place and Sam ran 49.45. The medley relay of Nathan, Wes, Will, Ranick ran 4:05.95 and also crossed the line in 1st place.

Richard Cardona was 4th in 800m run in 2:15.45, Carson Finn was 7th in 2:21.46, Karter Mebius was 8th in 2:21.70, and Kohen Mebius ran 2:54.06. Nathan Gaikowski was 5th in 200m dash in 25.35, Hayes Havlik ran 26.13 for 8th. Wesley Molnar ran 26.24 and Grason Finn ran 31.31. in the 2-mile run, Sutten Jensen was 4th in 12:33.76 and Rancik Fjerstad was 6th in 13:19.73, scoring huge valuable points.

It came down to the mile relay. Together the boys ran 3:45.22 with Will Grohs, Sam Poncelow, Richard Cardona, and Karter Mebius passing the baton. After the Spartans crossed in 1st place, they captured the team title with 141 points. Second was SBA with 135.5, 3rd was JVC with 128, and 4th was WW with 127 points.

Our next two meets have been rained out and our Last Chance Meet is Thursday in Avon. The top 24 times and distances qualify for the State Track & Field Meet in Sioux Falls on May 29-31.
