Spartans Secure Thrilling 48-46 Victory Against Viborg-Hurley in Parkston Classic Nail-Biter

On Friday, December 29, the Wessington Springs Spartans girls basketball team participated in the Parkston Classic. The Spartans were paired against Viborg-Hurley and came out with an exciting 48-46 victory to move to 5-1 on the season.

Viborg-Hurley controlled the first quarter and led the Spartans 17-11 after one quarter of play. In the second quarter, the Spartans got things going and outscored Viborg-Hurley 13-9 to trail only by 2, 26-24, at halftime.

The Spartans continued to play well in the third quarter and built a six point lead in the quarter before ending the quarter with a 37-34 lead.

The final quarter of action went back and forth. With just under a minute remaining in the game, the Spartans found themselves trailing 46-44. Avery Orth was able to tie the game at 46 with a bucket with 45 seconds remaining. The Spartan defense then stepped up and forced a shot clock violation by Viborg-Hurley and the Spartans got the ball back with 11 seconds remaining. On the last possession Alyssa Grohs made an excellent pass to Carissa Scheel on the baseline who made the 15-foot shot at the buzzer for the victory.

Avery Orth led the Spartans with 22 points and 16 rebounds.

Carissa Scheel had 10 points and nine rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had nine points and five rebounds.
