On Thursday, May 13, 2024, the Spartans traveled to Armour to participate in the Last Chance Meet for region 5B. Due to track and field moving to a top 24 system for qualifying for the three-day state meet, the region meet no longer holds value like it used to. Just because you place first or second place in your region, doesn’t give you an automatic bid for the state meet. Prior to the meet, we had some kids placed higher in the top 24 in their events, and we had some things that were on the bubble.
Javelin started the day early as it had to be held in Corsica. Avery Orth threw 86’ 8” and Lily Roesler threw 60’ 9”. Holden Havlik threw 132’ 0”, to land in 5th place, but felt he aggravated his hamstring again. Unfortunately, even though Holden’s throw earlier in the season was a qualifying mark, he is unable to throw at state in order to let that leg heal.
Back in Armour, Avery Orth threw the shot put 38’ 0” to win the meet. Anna Arhart threw 31’ 9” to land herself in 6th place. Anna also placed 6th in discus with her throw of 81’1”. Brooklyn Caffee threw 76’ 5” and Lily Roesler threw 47’ 9” in discus.
On the track, the girls’ 2-mile relay really battled, and they raced against themselves, cutting another six seconds off their time. Alyssa Grohs, Ella Kolousek, Abby Kolousek, and Kenzie Kolousek won the race and crossed the line in 10:36.03. Bailey Yost was 5th in the 100m hurdles with 18.68. Running the 100m dash, Abi Yost in 16.22 and Brooklyn Caffee ran 16.77. The 800m relay of Bailey Yost, Brooke Mohling, Mariah Messmer, and Ella Kolousek ran 2:03.11.
Abby Kolousek ran 6:00.42 in the mile run for 3rd place and Masynn Mebius ran 6:24.52 for 4th place. The 400m relay of Bailey Yost, Brooke Mohling, Avery Orth, and Mariah Messmer ran 58.32. Lily Roesler ran 1:25.41 and Kennedy Kolousek ran 1:25.35 in the 400m dash. The girls medley relay of Bailey Yost, Mariah Messmer, Kenzie Kolousek, and Alyssa Grohs ran 4:34.40 to capture 1st place.
Masynn Mebius ran 2:54.78 in the 800m run and Ella Kolousek ran 3:06.08. We had four running in the 200m dash: Brooke Mohling, 33.72; Abi Yost, 35.39; Brooklyn Caffee, 35.77; and Lily Roesler, 38.09. Abby Kolousek ran 14:04.36 for 2nd place and crossing in 3rd place was Alexis Roesler finishing in 14:31.03. The mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek ran 4:27.52 for 3rd place.
For the boys in shot put, Grady Gran threw 37’0” and Holden Jackson threw 29’ 10”. Out of the discus ring, Robbie Hine threw 106’ 6”, Branden Flowers threw 91’2” and Grady Gran threw 87’5”. Brock Krueger jumped 38’ 5.5” for 4th place and he was 5th place in the high jump at 5’10”. Ryder Michalek was 3rd in high jump clearing 6’ 0”.
On the track, the two-mile relay of Richard Cardona, Sam Poncelow, Kohen Mebius, and Damien Knippling ran 9:35.08 for 4th place. Branden Flowers also 4th place in the 110m hurdles in 19.65. In the 100m dash we had Will Grohs, 12.65; Damien Knippling 13.64; Holden Jackson, 14.06; Haiden Boschee, 14.24; and Grady Gran, 15.77. The 800m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Brock Krueger, Ryder Michalek, and Karter Mebius ran 1:37.98 for 5th place. Kohen Mebius ran the mile run in 6:11.75 for 6th place.
In the 400m relay, Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Richard Cardona, and Ryder Michalek ran 49.43 for 5th place. Haiden Boschee ran 1:04.71 in the 400m dash. The medley relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Ryder Michalek, and Sam Poncelow were disqualified for passing the baton out of the exchange zone.
Karter Mebius ran an amazing race in the 800m run. Karter’s finish came on stronger and he crossed the line in 1st place, running a 2:01.64! Kohen Mebius’ 800m time was 2:51.11. Running the 200m dash, Damien Knippling, 26.62; Branden Flowers, 26.93; Haiden Boschee, 28.61; and Holden Jackson ran 29.32. in the last race of the day, the mile relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Sam Poncelow, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius ran 3:43.65 for 2nd place.
After times and distances were submitted, the following have been accepted to participate in the State Track & Field Meet to be held in Sioux Falls at Howard Wood Stadium, Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25, 2024.
