Those who visit and reside in the town of Wessington Springs now have a new piece of art to admire as they travel along Dakota Avenue or visit the municipality’s pool. Local artist Ruthe Lindvall has been hard at work on a colorful mural painted on the east side of the Wessington Springs pool house.
“I drive by that pool house every day and thought ‘wouldn’t a mural be great there,’” said Springs Area Council of The Arts (SACOTA) board member Carrie Azure. “SACOTA board member Becky Easter was the one who brought up the idea of an internship. We dove into the quiet depths of the pool of talent we have in the area, and Ruthe emerged.”
With so many ways to represent the community in and around Wessington Springs, Ruthe was allowed to be creative with her ideas.
“What started with this basic idea has now evolved into the finished product. She took our ideas and built on them,” stated Azure.
Funding for this project was a team effort as costs for the talent and supplies were provided in part by the City of Wessington Springs, Wessington Springs Area Chamber and Development and a generous donation from Cheryl Kleppin.
“It’s a very fun project for SACOTA to be a part of and we really appreciate the city for allowing us to turn our ideas into reality,” says Azure. “We want to work with more entities so that when people come into our community they see the beautiful art and tell people about it, bringing more people to enjoy what we have here.”
Community members are invited to attend SACOTA’s official mural unveiling, set for Thursday, July 4, 12:30 p.m. at the Wessington Springs City Pool.
