The Wessington Springs City Council voted Wednesday to support an application for federal funding for the proposed Historic Wessington Springs Walking Route & Pedestrian Access Project.
The vote allows the city and project team to apply to the South Dakota Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). It does not mean the grant has been awarded or that construction has been approved.
If awarded, TAP funding would cover 81.95% of eligible project costs, with an 18.05% local match required. The project team is working to offset that local share through eligible in-kind contributions and other funding opportunities, reducing the amount that could ultimately be required from the city.
The proposed project would build on the Old Grade Trail and local tourism efforts, improving pedestrian connections to Wessington Springs’ historic sites, downtown, school and health care campus.
The competitive grant application is due in early October.
