One of Jerauld County's favorite summer traditions returns Saturday, June 20, as the Leap to Lane celebration promises a full day of family activities, food, entertainment and community fun.
Activities for the day are kicked off at 1:50 p.m. with a military tribute featuring a color guard presentation of the American flag, followed by the National Anthem at 2 p.m.
The annual car show will begin at 2 p.m. on Main Street, while a bean bag tournament starts at 3:30 p.m.
The afternoon lineup also includes a bicycle rodeo and kid’s bicycle poker run, bounce houses, silent auction and live music from Mogan’s Heroes.
One of the newer attractions at Leap to Lane is the South Dakota Micro Derby, organized by Adam Burnison. The event features both Power Wheels and youth lawn mower demolition derby competitions.
Power Wheels participants will compete in two age divisions, ages 3-6 and ages 7-10. Competitors may bring their own Power Wheels or rent one from Burnison, who expects to have approximately a dozen available.
The lawn mower derby will also feature two age divisions, ages 9-13 and ages 14-18. Burnison said lawn mower entries must meet safety requirements, including the installation of a protective cage. Rules and construction guidelines are available through the South Dakota Micro Derby Facebook page.
Burnison, who started organizing micro derbies about five years ago, said the events offer younger participants a chance to experience the excitement of a demolition derby in a safe, familyfriendly environment.
At 5 p.m., organizers will hold several popular drawings, including a gun raffle, a quarterbeef raffle donated by Todd and Kari Olinger, and a 50/50 drawing benefiting the Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Car show awards will also be presented.
New for 2026, the band Stomp Box will take the stage at 5:15 p.m.
Food will be available throughout the day, including ribs prepared by the Jerauld County Pitmasters, Sheriff Jason Weber's roasted hog, barbecue by the Leap to Lane Committee and fair food favorites from DK Concessions.
A beer garden will be in operation throughout the day; organizers remind attendees that coolers are not permitted.
