Out-of-town visitors and locals alike flocked to the Wessington Springs Elementary Gymnasium on the eve of Pheasant Season Opener last Friday, kicking off the season-long celebration with food, friendship and fun at the annual Wessington Springs Pheasants Forever Chapter Banquet.
“On behalf of the chapter, we want to thank everyone for their support at Friday evening’s Pheasants Forever fundraising banquet,” said Wessington Springs Pheasants Forever Chapter President Paul Sheldon. “From the sponsors who help make this event possible, to the volunteers who do all the meaningful work, and to the attendees who come out and support the chapter and mission — we thank you.”
More than 250 attendees filled the gymnasium to enjoy a hearty meal served by Jack Link’s, participate in games and raffles, and bid on dozens of items during the lively auction. This year’s prizes ranged from outdoor gear and firearms to handcrafted local items, reflecting the chapter’s commitment to keeping funds and community spirit close to home.
A highlight of the evening came when longtime Pheasants Forever member and conservationist Darwin Weeldreyer was inducted into the Wessington Springs Pheasants Forever Chapter #835 Hall of Fame.
Weeldreyer, who has spent decades advocating for wildlife habitat, youth outdoor education, and local conservation efforts, was also recognized at the state level. In an official proclamation, South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden declared October 17, 2025, as Darwin Weeldreyer Day in South Dakota, honoring his lifelong dedication to wildlife conservation and education.
As he accepted his award, Weeldreyer shared heartfelt words with the crowd: “Find your passion, do what you love. Find your guys who know what you love and stick with them. I love Pheasants Forever, and I love the state of South Dakota,” he said, turning to his friends and fellow chapter members. “I want to thank all these gentlemen for this very moment.”
The proclamation praised Weeldreyer’s leadership, his role in promoting outdoor awareness in schools, and his tireless volunteerism within Pheasants Forever and his local community.
Sheldon noted that the annual event does more than raise funds — it builds relationships and supports conservation across Jerauld County. “The banquet helps us fund future projects for the following year, where we always strive to keep assistance and spending local,” he said. “The chapter remains committed to putting our best foot forward to deliver on the Pheasants Forever mission and represent all of you for many years to come.”
Proceeds from the 2025 banquet will support local habitat restoration, youth outdoor education programs, and community partnerships designed to preserve South Dakota’s rich outdoor heritage locally for generations to come.
