A public hearing has been scheduled regarding a request to rezone property within the Wessington Springs city limits from agricultural to commercial use.
According to a notice published by the City of Wessington Springs (see the notice in this print and e-edition on PAGE SEVEN),
Brian and Kathy Bergeleen have filed a petition with the City Finance Office seeking to change the zoning classification of property legally described as a plat of BLB Tract in the NE ¼ of 18-107-64 from agricultural to commercial.
The public hearing on the request will be held Monday, March 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. at the City Finance Office. Interested persons may appear at that time to speak for or against the application.
During a public Cracker Barrel held Saturday, February 21 at the Springs Inn Cafe, property owner Brian Bergeleen said he has been in discussions with a company exploring the possibility of locating a data center in Wessington Springs at the above stated location.
“I’ve been talking to this company that is looking at putting a small data center in Springs,” Bergeleen said.
Even a small project could represent a significant source of revenue for the community, he said.
“We’re not fortunate enough to be on the Interstate where they build truck stops, for example, so this would be an economic boost,” Bergeleen said.
He said discussions remain preliminary and no final decisions have been made. Bergeleen described the potential facility as consisting of smaller “pods” rather than a single large building and said issues such as noise would need to be addressed as part of the review process.
“I’m not saying I’m for it or against it,” he said. “If it works, and it’s possible, it could help our utility rates perhaps remain the same or even decrease. When we need more money in the city, what do we do? Raise utilities.”
A copy of the rezoning petition is available for public inspection at the City Finance Office.
The notice was published in accordance with city requirements.
