Warbirds Earn State Reserve Champion Title for Second Straight Year

For the second year in a row, the Wolsey-Wessington Competitive Cheer team brought home the state reserve champion title, capping off a season defined by hard work and precision.

Head Coach Brandee Kelsey said the accomplishment reflects the team’s determination and growing skill level.

“The kids come to every practice and give 110% every time,” she said. “They’re so talented on their own, but even more than that, they’re incredibly hard workers.”

This year’s routine featured a higher degree of difficulty than in years past, a key factor in the team’s record-setting performance.

“Our difficulty level is a lot higher than it was last year,” Kelsey explained. “They score on both difficulty and execution, and we’ve been scoring the highest in school history.”

The Warbirds’ strong showing is especially impressive given their small squad size.

“There are only ten of them on the mat compared to other teams with 26,” Kelsey said. “It’s not very often that a small squad like us earns state runner-up and we’ve done it.”

Kelsey noted that powerhouse program Sioux Valley has dominated the sport for nearly two decades, making Wolsey-Wessington’s back-to-back runner-up finishes even more meaningful.

“Sioux Valley has won it for 18 years,” she said. “The fact that we’ve competed right alongside them and even beat them in Huron earlier this season — that’s something we carry with us. They’ve always been great role models for our kids.”

This year’s team included two seniors, one of whom — Carson Walters — plans to continue cheering at Iowa Central Community College, a nationally recognized competitive program.

As the season winds down, Kelsey said the team will stay active with off-season tumbling sessions and their Little Warbird Cheer program for young athletes.

“We’ve got to start them young when they’re flexible and fearless,” she added with a laugh.

Kelsey credited the Warbird community for standing behind the team every step of the way.

“Our town supports us all year long,” she said. “It’s so fun to see people who don’t normally follow cheer show up and root for us. The parents are amazing too. From early-morning practices to team suppers, they do so much to help these kids succeed.”
