Harold “Royce” VanBockern, born on November 8, 1946, to Harold and Emma (Patton) VanBockern, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left behind a legacy of loyalty, hard work, love, and a passion for life. A celebration of life to honor Royce will be held at a later date.
Royce graduated from Wessington Springs Christian High School Academy, affectionately known as “The Zoo,” in 1965. He furthered his education and basketball career at Central Christian Junior College (McPherson, KS) before proudly serving in the United States Air Force (AZ) from 1967 to 1971. After his military service, he began farming with his father in 1971, a pursuit that would remain close to his heart for the rest of his life.
In 1972, Royce married the love of his life, Carol Schultz, and together they expanded the family farm operation in 1982 and moved to their current homestead in Wessington Springs where they raised their three children, Kris, Cory, and Dawn. Farming has always been a family affair, and Royce took great pride in having his son, Cory alongside him on the family farm.
Royce was known by his family for being very determined and innovative; he could tackle any challenge that came his way. This was true in his work on the farm and in his hobbies, which included restoring classic cars, making diesel fuel from sunflowers in the barn, creating a go-cart track in the corn field and building a replica 50s gas station on the farm. He built the gas station complete with restored gas pumps, vintage coke machine and a diner where Royce enjoyed making milk shakes for everyone.
He loved cruising in his many classic cars, racing, bowling, and golf but it was his family and grandchildren — Nijla, Helga, Skye, Connor, Whitney, Walker, and Ava — that brought him the greatest joy. Royce was known for his quick wit and unique sense of humor, which brought happiness to all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, their children, Kris (Shane) Warwick of Harrisburg, Cory (Wendy) VanBockern of Wessington Springs, and Dawn (Shane) Christensen of Crooks. Royce’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, He will be deeply missed.
