On Tuesday, February 11, the Wessington Springs Spartans girls basketball team traveled to Platte to take on the Platte-Geddes Black Panthers. The Spartans started out slow and trailed 12-6 after one quarter of play. Platte-Geddes increased that lead to 14-6 with about 4 minutes to go in the half. At that time the Spartans went on a 14-2 run to end the first half and take a 20-16 lead into halftime. The Spartans had a really solid 3rd quarter outscoring Platte-Geddes 13-7 and took a 33-23 lead to the 4th quarter. The Spartan defense remained very strong in the 4th quarter and the Spartans pulled out the 44-27 victory. Kerstynn Heim led the way with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Kenzie Kolousek had 12 points and 5 rebounds. The Spartan JV team won their game 37-18.
On Thursday the Spartans hosted a 281 conference game against Hitchcock-Tulare. Earlier in the year the Spartans had defeated Hitchcock-Tulare by one point for 3rd place in the 281 conference tournament. This game was also highly competitive from beginning to end. The first quarter went back and forth and Hithcock-Tulare led 12-9 at end of one quarter. The Spartans had a strong 2nd quarter outscoring Hitchcock-Tulare by 14-7 and held a 23-19 lead at halftime. Hitchcock-Tulare had a strong 3rd quarter and took a 37-32 over the Spartans going into final quarter of play. To start the 4th quarter Hitchcock-Tulare was able to increase that lead to 44-34. However the Spartans went on a 7-0 run and cut the lead to 44-41 with less than 2 minutes to play. It looked like the Spartan defense was going to force a shot clock violation, but Hitchcock-Tulare made a desperation 3 at end of shot clock to make the score 47-41 and the Spartans could get no closer and the final score was Hitchcock-Tulare 52 and the Spartans 43. Kerstynn Heim again led the way with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Mariah Messmer had 13 points and 9 rebounds. Ashlyn Weber chipped in 9 points.
The Spartan JV team continued their strong season with a 27-20 victory.
