Spartan Girls Basketball Finishes 9-11 on Regular Season
Fifth-seeded Wessington Springs scored a 49-48 win over No. 4 Castlewood in the Region 2B quarterfinals on Tuesday in White. Wessington Springs had 14 points from Kerstynn Heim, 12 points from Mariah Messmer and seven points from both Kendall Kolousek and Ashlyn Weber. The Spartans (10-11) will take on Deubrook Area (16-5) Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Huron Arena.
The Spartan girls ended their regular season with two home wins to have a final regular season record of 9-11.
On Tuesday, February 18 the Spartans hosted Kimball/White Lake and came away with a 53-30 victory. The Spartans started hot and jumped out to a 17-5 lead after one quarter of play. The Spartans kept it up in the 2nd quarter by outscoring KWL 14-4 and held a 31-9 lead at halftime. KWL was able to outscore the Spartans in the 3rd quarter 11-6 but the Spartans still held a 37-20 lead going into the 4th quarter. The Spartans controlled the 4th quarter and came away with the 53-30 win.
Kerstynn Heim led the scoring with 16 points and Addy Orth added 10 points. The Spartan JV team defeated KWL JV by a score of 31-7 for a win in their last game of the season. The JV team ended their season with a record of 14-1. A unique stat for the girls JV team is that they scored 37 points exactly in seven of their 15 games.
The final game of the regular season was a victory over James Valley Christian by a score of 5420. The Spartans got off to a slow start and led 10-7 after one quarter of play. However, the Spartans dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters by out scoring JVC 36-8.
The Spartans cruised in the 4th quarter to get the 5420 win. The Spartans had many players score, led by Addy Orth, Kaitlyn Braun and Kenzie Kolousek all scoring eight points apiece. Kerstynn Heim had seven points.
