Spartans Defeat ILP, Come Up Short at Armour

The Wessington Springs Spartans girls basketball team earned a 281 Conference win Tuesday at home, defeating Iroquois/Lake Preston 4931. The Spartans jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first quarter. ILP responded by outscoring the Spartans 13-6 in the second quarter, tying the game at 17 at halftime.

Wessington Springs came out strong in the third quarter, outscoring ILP 18-9 to take a ninepoint lead heading into the fourth. The Spartans continued to build the lead in the final quarter to secure the 49-31 victory. Kerstynn Heim led the Spartans with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Kenzie Kolousek added 11 points, four rebounds and four steals.

On Thursday, the Spartans traveled to Armour to face Tripp-Delmont/Armour. The game was back and forth in the first quarter, with the teams tied at 11 at the end of the period. Wessington Springs struggled offensively in the second quarter and trailed 21-15 at halftime.

Tripp-Delmont/ Armour built a 35-20 lead with two minutes remaining in the third quarter before the Spartans scored late to cut the deficit to 35-25 heading into the fourth. Wessington Springs continued to chip away in the final quarter and pulled within one point, trailing 43-42 with less than a minute remaining, but a potential go-ahead shot did not fall. The Spartans were forced to foul and fell 45-42.

Kenzie Kolousek led the Spartans with 12 points. Masynn Mebius scored nine points, and Kendall Kolousek, Kerstynn Heim and Aunnika Heumiller each grabbed six rebounds.
