On Monday, May 4, 2026, the 7/8th graders went to Huron to participate in 281 JH Track and Field Meet. These seven kids represented Wessington Springs extremely well. Josie Arhart threw the shot put 25’ 4.5” bringing home 1st place in shot put and she threw the discus 52’ 2”. Josie ran the 100m dash in 15.50. Kaycee Scheel threw shot put 16’ 3.5” and the discus 37’ 3”. Kaycee ran the 100m dash in 15.96 and the 200m dash in 35.06. Aunnika Heumiller ran 18.50 in the 100m hurdles for 2nd place. She ran the 300m hurdles in 58.50, crossing the line in first place. Aunnika then ran the 800m run in 3:05.31 for 6th place.

Chase Wenzel is another Spartan, who had an amazing day. Chase started his day by going over the high jump bar at 4’ 10” for 3rd place. Then on the track he ran 100m low hurdles in 16.77 and the 300m low hurdles in 52.43 to capture first place in both of those events. Keaton Hasty won the high jump clearing 5’ 3”. Keaton was 2nd in the 100m low hurdles running 52.68 and he ran 28.40 in the 200m dash for 7th place. Ethan Heumiller ran the mile in 5:51.88 for 3rd place and he ran his 800m run in 2:41.78 for 5th place. Together these four boys ran the mile relay in 4:22.34 for first place. As a team, these four boys earned enough team points to place 3rd in the team standings.

I am very proud of all these 7/8th graders as they are pushing themselves in practice and improving each meet. They are also going to most of the varsity meets to compete there as well. It isn’t easy to compete against the upper classmen, but they are proving to themselves that they can achieve great things. We have a lot to look forward to as they grow in strength and confidence in their track and field events.

On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the bus left town at 7 am to head down to Burke, SD, to participate in the Meet of Legends. With the constant cloud cover and strong northwesterly winds, the temperature never got out of the 40*s.

From the discus ring, Anna Arhart threw 89’ 4” and out of the shot-put ring she threw 35’ 1” for 2nd place.

The Meet of Legends starts the running events with the medley relay first so the 400 or 800m runners can run in their open event as well. The two-mile relay of Kendall Kolousek, Aunnika Heumiller, Ella Kolousek, and Masynn Mebius ran 12:38.45. Aunnika Heumiller then ran the 100m hurdles in 22.05. The 2-mile relay of Max Mebius, Carson Finn, Sutten Jensen, and Ezra Anson ran 9:14.34 to hold onto the lead and cross the line in first place. In the 100m dash, Casen Waters ran 13.05 and Chase Dunsmore ran 14.23. Our 800m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Max Mebius, Wes Molnar, and Will Grohs ran 1:40.86 for 4th place, but they only medaled top three at this meet for relays.
