Donald Fay Knigge Sr. passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at 81 years of age.
Don was born on May 6 of 1941 in Wessington Springs, SD. He was one of seven children born to August and Alta Knigge. Brothers and sisters that passed before him were Willis, Elsie, and Dakota. He is survived by his sister Leona and his brothers Larry and Lyle. The family was raised on the family farm near Wessington Springs, SD where Don attended the Happy Hill Country School as a young man.
You will never meet anyone who worked as hard as Don. From working on the family farm as a kid to working with harvest crews in the corn fields of Nebraska, to driving truck for Olsen Implement in Huron, to welding at Huron Manufacturing, to “beating on tires” for Wise Tire in Mitchell; he worked his fingers to the bone to make a life for his family. Those hard-working hands are now at rest.
He lived a simple life and he was a man of strong faith. He enjoyed visiting with friends and family above all else. He enjoyed going to local spots like the old West 40 café and I-90 Truck Stop in Mitchell for breakfast and coffee with the friends and regulars who would gather there most mornings. He enjoyed just hopping in the car and going for drives in the country, sometimes with no particular destination in mind, but often passing by familiar places from his past. But above all else he enjoyed spending time with the ones he loved and those who loved him back, the list of whom is too long to include here.
We ask all of you who knew Don, shared coffee with him, or loved him as we all do, to join us for a Celebration of Life on Sunday, November 6th at Grace Baptist Church (600 S Edmunds) in Mitchell, SD at 2 p.m.
