Throughout the season youth turn in scores during match time frames. Those scores go up against the high scores from across the state. This is a great way to see how youth will stack up a state. In Match 1 in Compound With Sights & Release Mauer Jones placed 4th with a 150.17 in the junior division. In Compound Without Sights & Release Mauer Jones placed 1st in the junior division with a 131.08. Compound-OPEN found Jones placing 3rd with 150.17. In Match 2, Devin Van Dyke placed 3rd in the junior division of Compound Without Sights with a score of 117. Highlights from Match 3 include: Mauer Jones with a 136.08 placing him 1st in the junior division in Compound Without Sights & Release. Jones also shot a 150.18 which placed 4th in the junior division in Compound With Sights & Release.
The Jerauld/Buffalo 4-H Shooting Sports Club proudly had 34 youth qualify for the 4-H State Shoot, which took place from April 25-27 in Ft. Pierre, SD. Shooting sports stands as the largest project area in SD 4-H. Coach Craig Olinger shared, “Our goals are to instill confidence in their discipline, ensure safety, and most importantly, have fun.” The 4-H participants began their practice sessions in January, refining their skills throughout the season. Coach AJ Karsky expressed, “I’m most proud of the dedication shown by all our instructors and the eagerness of the kids to enhance their abilities.”
A few weeks ago, the club organized a fun shoot round robin, providing kids with the chance to explore different disciplines they may not be as familiar with; this turned out to be a fantastic opportunity. Winning the fun shoot was Dee Zastrow in the beginner division and Tenley Olinger the junior division. While some participants thrive on competition, others are focused on acquiring life skills. Audra Scheel, 4-H Educator, remarked, “Thank you to all our coaches. This program would not be what it is without their unwavering support and dedication! It is a testament to the program when a youth successfully harvests their first deer or turkey. Regardless of individual goals, these young people will gain skills from this program that will last a lifetime.”
