Alma Zida Mohling, age 104, of Wessington Springs, passed away on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Weskota Manor. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Wessington Springs Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, also at the church, with a prayer service beginning at 7.
Alma (Thompson) Mohling was born December 10, 1919, to Lewis and Zida (Grieve) Thompson in Jerauld County at the home of her grandparents, Walter and Mae Grieve. She was cradle rocked at the Harmony Friends Church in Jerauld County. Alma attended country grade schools near her family farm. She always talked about riding her horse to school. She attended high school in Wessington Springs and graduated in 1937.
Alma worked at the Wessington Springs High School in the Superintendent’s office from 1937 to 1939. She then started working at the local bank in Wessington Springs. Alma was married to Wilfred Mohling on June 11, 1944, and they started their lives together on a farm south of Wessington Springs in Aurora County. To this union, five children were born.
She attended the United Methodist Church, was a charter member of the Tuesday Sues Extension Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Weskota Foundation. She also worked in the business office of the local sale barn for a few years. Alma and Willie retired from farming in 1986 and moved to Wessington Springs. Alma enjoyed cooking, canning, crafting, sewing, gardening and spending time with her family. Her most cherished time was when she could spend it with her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
Left behind to cherish her memory are her five children: Roger Mohling of Watertown, SD; Kieth (Charlotte) Mohling of Wessington Springs, SD; Barbara (Neil) Murphy of Wessington Springs, SD; Nancy (Dallas) Thompson of Fishers, IN; and Mary Mohling of Tulare, SD; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren: Kollin (Michelle) Mohling, parents of Torrence, Kolbe, and Quinn; Myles (Sydney) Mohling; Jesse (Jess) Mohling, parents of Clara; Cory (Joy) Mohling, parents of Cale, Cade, Logan, and Brooke; Jill (Rusty) VanderWerff, parents of Cassi and Tyson; Julie Schuur; Shannon(Cory) Tobin, parents of Hadley, Griffin, Cain, and Will; Lanny (Tricia) Murphy, parents of Jayla, Brylyn, and Aizley; Andy (Lacy) Murphy, parents of Blair, Aaliyah, and Riggs; Alicia (Chris) Hammond, parents of Kyler and Kudder; Brandon (Natalie) Sheffield, parents of Zach; and sister-in-law Alice Villbrandt.
She is preceded in death by her husband Wilfred in 2004, parents Lewis and Zida Thompson, Inlaws Fred and Matilda Mohling, brothers Lauren Thompson and Tom Thompson, sisters Betty Birchfield-Castle, Ila Warnke, and Abbie Younie, brother-in-law, Kenny Mohling, sisters-inlaw Eileen Swanson, Max Miller, Dorothy Wickre, and Phyllis Mohling, and one great-grandchild, Kayden Hammond.
