Elroy Huether, age 87, of Aberdeen, formerly of Wessington Springs, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, June 27, 2025, at Avera St. Luke Hospital in Aberdeen. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Nurnberg Basham Funeral Service in Wessington Springs. Burial will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
Elroy Dale Huether was
born on September 15, 1937 along with his twin sister, Elnear to Walter and Emma (Decker) Huether in Wessington Springs, SD. Elroy attended country school and then went to Wessington Springs High School, graduating in 1956. In high school, he played football and set several records in track.
Elroy spent many years in the National Guard. He worked as a cook and his unit helped build the Big Bend Dam near Ft. Thompson, SD.
Elroy married Carol Eastberg on September 1, 1963. To this union three children were born. Robbie and twins, Vicky and Valery.
Elroy worked at the Co-Op for many years. First as manager of the grocery store and then the hardware store. Elroy was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener and loved sharing his bounty with friends and family.
In his later years, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD, and lived at Dow Rummel Village. In 2019, he moved to Prairie Heights Healthcare in Aberdeen, SD, where he was closer to his daughters. His greatest joys were his granddaughter, Alyssa, and great granddaughter, Charlotte.
Elroy is survived by daughters: Vicky Huether of Aberdeen, SD; Valery Huether of Warner, SD; granddaughter: Alyssa Huether and greatgranddaughter, Charlotte Huether of Alpena, SD.; brother: Ron (Dorothy) Huether of Sioux Falls SD; sister: Elnear (Milt) Marshman Mutch of Sioux Falls, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Elroy was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Allan; and his son, Robbie. Arrangements are with Nurnberg-Basham Funeral Service.
