It was a big week for Wessington Springs athletics, withhomecoming highlights, a top-ranked football win, and strong showings across volleyball and cross-country.
The Lady Spartans hosted two home games during homecoming week. They started the week against Tripp-Delmont Armour on Monday, falling in three sets in a hard-fought game. The Spartans bounced back Thursday night with a sweep against Lower Brule. The Lady Spartans are currently 9-8 on the season at press deadline Tuesday, and are over halfway done with the season.
Next up, the crosscountry team had their first and only home meet for the season. As always, the 281 Conference crosscountry meet was held at the Springs Country Club in Wessington Springs. Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) junior Alexis Roesler walked away with a medal, placing 10th. The Spartans also ran Monday in Miller with strong times and are eyeing state in the coming weeks.
The Bucks stayed undefeated Friday night hosting #2 Wagner in Forestburg. With a tiedup game at halftime after a late touchdown from Wagner, the score was 6-6. The Bucks struck in the 3rd quarter, advancing 13-6 to give them a lead they would keep for the rest of the game. The main story, however, is about the defense who held Wagner to only six points with a late interception to seal the game. With a top five matchup, the Bucks brought home a huge win and are now sitting atop the seed-point rankings in class 11B at #1 in the state. They travel to Miller this Friday with the opposition coming off an 8-36 loss to Winner last week.
With momentum building across all sports and playoff season on the horizon, the Spartans and Bucks are gearing up for an exciting finish for fall athletics.
