One Last “Cuppy’s Corner”

On Monday, July 27, 2026, Grandma had a busy day. After the whirlpool bath, for breakfast she ate cereal, boiled egg, and cup of fresh fruit. Grandma wants to send happy anniversary wishes to Fred and Cindy Zenk and Ryan and Alisha Bell. Candi had a couple of her grandkids out to visit. For lunch she ate beef stroganoff and carrots. Right after lunch, Becky and Brock stopped in for a visit. The Owls will play again tonight in Chamberlain. If they win, they advance to the State Tournament in Mitchell, starting August 5 and if they lose, they will play again on Thursday. Grandma and Grandpa were lifetime ticket holders to the State Amateur Baseball Tournament. We talked about the paper Bingo cards, numbered program booklets, the grilled burgers and onions, and the memories made with other baseball families. Grandma was too tired out to go play Bingo. For supper, Grandma ate scalloped potatoes, asparagus, and pears. The Owls lost their game and will now play on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, July 28, 2026, breakfast was cream of wheat, bacon, donut, and half cup of fruit. Lunch was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, and carrot cake. Grandma got her fingernails repainted in her favorite color, pink. Supper was sloppy joe, Tator tots, and baked beans. Becky stopped out in the evening and opened the curtains to see the sunset. We discussed how hot it continues to be.

Wednesday, July 29, 2026, was another busy day. Breakfast was sausage gravy and biscuits with scrambled eggs and cup of fresh fruit. Cindy came to town to visit with Grandma and attend some meetings. For lunch, Cindy and Grandma ate spaghetti and meatballs, green beans, garlic sticks, and cake. Grandma was big winner at Bingo, winning six nickels. Supper was ham salad sandwich with Vegetable beef soup. The MN Twins were shown on FOX, so Grandma was able to watch them. They were struggling to get any runs in. The score was 4-0 early on and that is what the final score ended as. Becky stopped out and we watched the Twins and read the True Dakotan. Grandma has a hoarse voice, so we didn’t cheer too loud for the Twins.

Thursday, July 30, 2026, is another hot day. Grandma ate her favorite breakfast, oatmeal with raisins and had a muffin for breakfast. Cindy saw Grandma on the ViewClix frame and Becky called Grandma. Grandma told me that she is feeling a little better, but she still has her scratchy voice. She told me to give Rydell a hug from this ole Granny and have a safe trip. For lunch, Philly beef sandwich was served with potato salad and cake for dessert. Supper was a chicken sandwich, seasoned potatoes, and a cup of mandarin oranges. Due to the welcomed moisture, the Owls game was postponed to Friday. They will still play in Chamberlain, but it will be played at a different field. If they win, they advance to the State Tournament in Mitchell and if they lose, their season is over. Go Owls Go!

Friday, July 31, 2026, in the early morning hours, Grandma took her last breath here on Earth. Our family can’t thank the staff at Weskota Manor for all the love, care, and compassion that they have given to Grandma, to make her feel content the past seven months. While I am saddened that I was not at Grandma’s bedside to hold her hand one last time, I will always remember her when I sit in the shade of a tree under the blue sky to admire the flowers, try to wear a little more lipstick, and drink a glass of chocolate milk in her honor. Mike and Becky Krueger celebrated their wedding anniversary today. The Owls advance to the State Amateur Tournament. They scored early and then had to battle their way back, as it came to the bottom of the nineth inning. They had two runners on base, one out, when the Winner Demons intentionally walked Layne Cotton. That’s when Blaze Herdman stepped to the plate and his single brought two runs across the plate for the 8-7 victory. The selection show will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, to see who matches up with who in Mitchell, starting August 6, 2026, at Caldwell Park.

To her faithful readers of Cuppy’s Corner, it is you who kept her going. She loved knowing that your day was made a little better after reading the column. She recalls many people telling her that they look forward to seeing Cuppy’s Corner in the True Dakotan.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to Kristi and Delia, Craig, Penny, and Duke, Karen Wenzel for always providing a little corner of the paper for the love to be shared through Cuppy’s Corner.
