Bob Winter, 82, of Rapid City, SD, passed away Thursday, May 9, 2024, at Monument Health Hospital, in Rapid City, surrounded by his family. Funeral service was at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Osheim Schmidt Funeral Home, in Rapid City, SD, with visitation starting at 9 a.m. Burial followed at Mountain View Cemetery, and lunch was held at American Legion Post 22 afterwards.
Bob Winter was born February 22nd, 1942, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, to Herbert and Theresa “Tracy” Winter. He and his four siblings, Geri, Duane, Carol, and Elaine grew up proudly together in the scenic western town of South Dakota. Bob graduated from Wessington Springs High School in the class of 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley “Snooks” McLaughlin, on September 2nd, 1962. Together they built a beautiful family and were blessed with four children, Scott, Brad, Jason “Jay”, and Lauriann “Bubba”.
He was proud to be the owner and operator of Winter Trucking, to serve in the South Dakota National Guard, and to be a Truck Driver for CO-OP, Winter Trucking, Airborne Express, and Winter Hwy Mail Route. He attended Immanuel Baptist Church and was a member of the American Legion in Wessington Springs.
In 1993, Bob and Snooks, with their youngest child, Bubba, packed up and moved to Rapid City, SD where the rest of their children were living at the time. Over the years they welcomed eight grandchildren into their family and embraced the title of grandparents. Many years later they became greatgrandparents to nine greatgrandchildren.
Over his life, Bob had many passions. He enjoyed football (Go Packers!), and engaging in passionate conversations with his sons who are Seahawk and Cowboys fans. He also was fond of fishing, playing cards, Nascar, and golf over the years. More recently, his family holds closely in their hearts, Bob’s frequent phone calls to check in and see how they are doing, and his large candy bowl he kept stocked for his visitors, much to the enjoyment of his great-grandchildren.
He is survived in death by his wife of 61 years, Shirley; sister, Geri Barta; children, Scott (Kristi) Winter, Brad (Clayton) Winter, Jason Winter, and Lauriann (Andy) Fuhrman; grandchildren, Dylan (Esma) Winter, Shelby (Nathan) Wentz, Riley (Megan) Winter, Nathan (Abbigale) Winter, Mikenzie (Kyle) Winter, Cody (Amber) Winter, Kaley Fuhrman, and Brecken Fuhrman; nine great-grandchildren; special friends and cousins, Ronnie (Kim) Winter, Cala Jean Kopfmann, Dennis McEldowney, and Carol; and countless more friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Tracy, brother Duane (June) Winter, sister Carol (Bruce, Roger) Pier, sister Elaine (David) Tripp, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Fairmont Grand Senior Living, for the care Bob received the last few years. As well as to those who helped Bob enter Heaven peacefully at Monument Health Hospital.
