Week 4 in the state legislature is cruising right along. The deadline date for bill introduction has passed and there are about 500 bills and resolutions have been introduced. The www. sdlegislature.gov website is a great website to track and search for bills that interest you.

It was a big fourth week of session. The Governor’s speech regarding border security received a disproportionate amount of the attention. Right before the speech, I had an opportunity to speak with Gov. Kristi Noem. I told her that I appreciate her bringing attention to this issue.

In South Dakota's capital on Thursday, Governor Noem gathered the House and Senate to discuss deploying National Guard troops to aid Texas with its high number of illegal immigrants.

We finished legislative day 17, 20 days remain in the 2024 Le g i s l a t ive Session. There are 258 House Bills and 220 Senate Bills, all of which will have a committee hearing and if passed, will have floor debate in both Chambers. Our plate is full.

Musings on City Light Plant’s 100th Anniversary

BY DUKE WENZEL  The city light plant marked its 100th anniversary in 2023. The brick and tile building was started in July of 1923 as the big numbers say on the east side. The building would first house a 100 horse power engine the city purchased at Anderson Indiana.

Senior Center Moments

The regular monthly meeting for the Wessington Springs Senior Citizen’s Center was postponed to January 22, 2024, due to extremely cold and snowy weather on January 8. Meetings are held the second Monday of every month at 12:30 p.m.

Darleen Cuppy wrote her Cuppy’s Corner News Monday forenoon. Delia Atkinson came to get it later. Darleen enjoyed the chicken fried steak dinner from the Senior Center. It was delivered by Joanne Grohs. Darleen worked on her gifts list for the belated Cuppy Christmas.
