News from District 20 Legislators

Wrapping up the legislative session is always a bit of an odd experience. You’ve worked relentlessly for eight weeks and then the final week arrives and the whole normal order of business is upended. Regular committee work has ended and all that remains are conference committees and the budget.

As Citizen Le g islat ors we each bring experience and or baggage to Pierre. Both play a part in how and if a proposed bill becomes law. With over 450 bills each year, legislators are tasked with learning quickly about a wide range of issues, all within a 38-day session.

Week 9, the final week in the state legislature was full of a lot of hurry up and wait. The final week was full of conference committees for bills that had previously been heard, and the two chambers were in back and forth negotiations on the tax cut bill.

Week 8 in the state le gislature hummed right along. The second to last week seemed to be a transitional kind of week of sorts. Committees wrapped up their work, and the chambers started to move towards political funny business. The House had some long list of bills we heard.

News from District 20 Legislators

Revenue setting for fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, and June 30, 2024, is now complete. The revenue setting committee is made up of five Senators and five Representatives all from the Joint Committee on Appropriations.

Notes from the WS American Legion Auxiliary

The Wessington Springs Legion Auxiliary met February 20, 2023 at the Weskota North Apartments at 7 p.m. with 14 in attendance – this was a make up meeting after weather cancellation in January. After prayer and pledges, the Secretary and Treasurer reports were approved as read.

City at the Foothills

Darleen Cuppy wrote her Cuppy’s Corner News Monday morning. Delia Atkinson got it later in the forenoon. Darleen enjoyed the roast beef dinner from the Manor kitchen Monday noon. Reina Peterson Ford delivered Darleen’s prescription, etc. from Lewis Drug Monday afternoon.
