Next week is St. Valentine’s Day. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, St. Valentine was a priest who was martyred in the 3rd century by Emperor Claudius. Why was he martyred? Because he married couples in violation of the emperor’s edict.

News from District 20 Legislators

The 98th l e g i s l a t i v e session rolls on and bills are being heard in committee. SB 71 was brought by the Depar tment of Revenue, but since I’m the chair of the transportation committee, they asked me to carry it through the legislative process.

We wrapped up week 3 in the state legislature

We wrapped up week 3 in the state legislature, and it’s getting busier and more fast paced. I’m still learning the routine and trying to learn the order of operations. I can definitely tell you there are a lot of parliamentary procedures that are confusing.

We finished legislative day 12

We finished legislative day 12, there are 26 days remaining. So far there are 152 House Bills and 138 Senate Bills. This week the Joint Committee on Appropriations heard testimony from Board of Regents, Technical Education, Department of Ed and Ag and Natural Resources.

In South Dakota we have a citizen legislature

In South Dakota we have a citizen legislature, a legislature made up of citizens who have a full-time occupation besides being a legislator. This is my 3rd term representing District 20. I’m honored and admittedly a bit overwhelmed most days. We will be in session 38 days this year.

The South Dakota le gislature is a part time legislature, made of every day regular folks like you and me. Some have full-time jobs, like myself, and some are retired. This is my first term serving in the legislature; it’s both an honor and a privilege.
