The Spartans Girls basketball team began the 2024-25 season with a road win at Wolsey-Wessington by a score of 49-47. The first half was an offensive struggle for both teams. The Spartans led 7-6 at end of 1st quarter. Wolsey-Wessington took a lead in 2nd quarter and led 17-12 late in quarter until Ashlyn Weber hit a deep 3 in final seconds to cut the lead to 17-15 heading into halftime. The Spartans picked up things offensively in the 3rd quarter and outscored Wolsey-Wessington 15-11 in the quarter and led 3028 going to final quarter. The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter until the Spartans were able to build a lead and then hold on for the win. The Spartans were 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter. Kerstynn Heim led the way with 12 points. Ashlyn Weber and Addy Orth each had 8 points. Logan Mohling and Kendall Kolousek chipped in 7 points apiece as well.
On Thursday was the first home game for the Spartans. Unfortunately, the Spartans were defeated by Faulkton by a score of 55-47. The Spartans got off to a good start and led 18-13 at end of 1st quarter. However, Faulkton got things going and the Spartans struggled offensively and Faulkton led 27-25 at halftime. To start the 3rd quarter Faulkton was able to build a 9 point lead by midway through the quarter, but the Spartans went on a furious comeback and cut the lead back down to 2 going into the 4th quarter. The start of the 4th quarter saw the teams go back and forth and the Spartans were even able to take a lead 42-41 early in the 4th, but Faulkton was able to end the game on a 14-5 run for the win. Mariah Messmer led the scoring with 12 points. Kerstynn Heim and Kenzie Kolousek each had 8 points.
Next up for the Spartans is a trip to Howard on Saturday, December 21 for a girls and boys doubleheader.
