Lady Spartans raise funds, cancer awareness at local event

A pink-clad crowd filled the gym for the Lady Spartan volleyball action vs. Wolsey-Wessington last Thursday night, held in conjunction with Volley for a Cure, a cancer awareness event that year after year, raises thousands for Weskota Foundation's Cancer Awareness Fund. The fund provides assistance for local cancer patients, cancer awareness, education and preventionbased activities in Jerauld County.

The Warbirds brought a straight-set win over the Spartans with Carissa Scheel notching eight kills, Alyssa Grohs passing out nine assists and Addy Orth having five blocks.

In addition to selling baked goods and signs in honor and in memory of loved ones and friends who have battled cancer, the volleyball team also hosted a silent auction and sold chances on a handmade quilt by Donna Grieve. The lucky winners of the quilt was Coach Lynn Damm.

Ellen Powell of Weskota Foundation said that the donations from the annual volleyball team event have single handedly raised more money for the Weskota Foundation’s Cancer Awareness Fund than any other source. Powell adds that assistance in the way of gas cards and gift certificates for local cancer patients is funded through the efforts of the Wessington Springs Spartan volleyball team efforts.
