We had a busy and successful week of track & field meets this past week. We started on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, in Huron for the 281 Conference meet. Once again, the weather was not in our favor, but with the end of the season nearing a close, we need to make the most of every meet.
Avery Orth won the girl’s shot put with her throw of 37’ 11” and Anna Arhart landed in 4th place with her throw of 32’ 7. Brooklyn Caffee had a PR in discus with her throw of 72’ 9” to lead the Spartans. Avery threw 67’ 1” and Lily Roesler threw 46’ 1”, Anna Arhart threw but didn’t get one measured. Avery threw the javelin 67’ 0” and Lily’s throw was 47’ 2”.
On the track, the 2-mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Kenzie Kolousek, Ella Kolousek, and Bailey Yost ran 11:40.70 for 4th place. Bailey then ran the 100m hurdles in 18:65 and finished in 5th place. Running the 100m dash for the Spartans: Kaebry Dixon, 14.87; Londyn Mikkelson, 15.12; Brooke Mohling, 15.56; Abi Yost, 15.95; Brooklyn Caffee, 17.15. The 800m relay of Londyn Mikkelson, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek in 2:00.96 to finish in 5th place.
Abby Kolousek ran 6:07.2 for 6th place, Masynn Mebius ran 6:37.6, and Alexis Roesler ran 6:34 in the mile run. The 400m relay of Londyn Mikkelson, Avery Orth, Mariah Messmer, and Brooke Mohling finished in 5th place with their time of 1:01.25. Ella Kolousek ran 1:15.06, Kennedy Kolousek ran 1:27.79, and Lily Roesler ran 1:28.87 in the 400m dash. The medley relay of Bailey Yost, Mariah Messmer, Kenzie Kolousek, and Alyssa Grohs ran 4:43.98 to cross the line in 1st place.
Although the girls didn’t get placings, they ran either a personal or seasonal best in the 800m run. Masynn Mebius ran 3:01.57; Ella Kolousek 3:02.34; Kennedy Kolousek, 3:33.69; and Lily Roesler ran 3:36.25.
In the 200m dash, Kaebry Dixon, 32.21; Londyn Mikkelson, 32.98; Brooke Mohling, 34.02; Abi Yost, 36.06; and Brooklyn Caffee, 37.69. Despite the wind, the girls in the two-mile run both cut time off and got PR’s. Abby Kolousek ran 13:34.66 for 5th place and Alexis Roesler was 14:01 for 5th place. The mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Bailey Yost, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek ran 4:43.47 for 4th place.
The boys also did well to represent WSHS in the 281-conference meet. Grady Gran threw 38’ 0” for 5th place, Robbie Hine threw 36’ 10” for 6th place, and Holden Jackson threw 31’ 10.5” in the shot put. In the discus, Robbie threw 105’ 5” for 3rd place and Grady threw 100’ 0” for 7th place. Branden Flowers threw the javelin 84’ 2”. Brock Krueger jumped 38’ 7.75” in triple jump for 4th place. Ryder Michalek was 2nd in high jump and Brock Krueger was 3rd.
The two-mile relay of Richard Cardona, Sutten Jensen, Kohen Mebius and Damien Knippling ran 10:33.48 for 6th place. Branden Flowers ran 20.79 in the 100m hurdles for 6th place. Will Grohs led the Spartans in the 100m dash with his time of 12.70. Holden Jackson, 14.03; Haiden Boschee, 14.57; and Grady Gran ran 15.58. The 800m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Brock Krueger, Sam Poncelow, and Karter Mebius ran 1:38.44 for 2nd place.
Kohen Mebius ran his mile run in 6:18.25. Nathan Gaikowski, Holden Jackson, Haiden Boschee, and Branden Flowers ran 52.51 for 4th place in the 400m relay. Ryder Michalek is gaining strength and making his return back to the track after the basketball injury sidelined him for a while with a nasty infection after the tooth broke. Ryder ran the 400m dash in 57.02 for 5th place. Haiden Boschee ran 1:06.08 and Kohen Mebius ran 1:14.22.
The medley relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Richard Cardona, Sam Poncelow ran 4:02.23 for 1st place. Karter Mebius ran a PR in his open 800m run, 2:06.01 for 2nd place. Running PR’s in the 200m dash were Richard Cardona, 27.30; and Damien Knippling, 27.34. Will Grohs ran 27.71 and Holden Jackson ran 30.04. Sutten Jensen ran a PR in the 2-mile run with his time of 12:58. The mile relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Sam Poncelow, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius ran 3:40.86 for 1st place and a season best.
On Thursday, May 9, 2024, we competed in the Buck Timmins Memorial Meet in Parkston. Here they medaled 1st-6th for individual events and 1st-3rd for relays. Out of the discus cage, Avery Orth threw 85’ 3”, Anna Arhart threw 81’ 6”, and Brooklyn Caffee landed 73’ 11” to increase her PR. In javelin, Avery threw 92’ 0” and Lily Roesler threw 63’ 8”. Over at shot put, Avery Orth threw 38’ 11.75” for 2nd place and Anna Arhart threw 30’9” for 6th place.
The 2-mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Ella Kolousek, Abby Kolousek, and Kenzie Kolousek ran 10:44.43 for 2nd place. Running the 100m dash was Abi Yost, 15.47; Lily Roesler, 16.79; and Brooklyn Caffee, 17.01. Brooke Mohling, Kendall Kolousek, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer ran 2:07.73. Masynn Mebius ran 6:30 and Alexis Roesler ran 6:44.57 in the mile run. The 400m relay of Brooke Mohling, Avery Orth, Kaebry Dixon, and Mariah Messmer ran 58.59. Kenzie Kolousek ran 1:02.20 for a PR in the 400m dash and Lily Roesler ran 1:28.89. The medley relay of Brooke Mohling, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer, and Ella Kolousek ran 5:04.64. Alyssa Grohs ran her 800m run in 2:33.56 for a season best and claimed 2nd place, while Masynn Mebius ran season best of 2:51.87.
Running the 200m dash, Abi Yost, 33.29; Brooklyn Caffee, 36.37; and Lily Roesler, 37.04. Continuing to cut their time significantly in the 2-mile run were Abby Kolousek, 13:07.89 for 5th place and Alexis Roesler, 13:40.44, both of which were PRs. The mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek clocked their fastest time this season of 4:26.48 for 2nd place.
Robbie Hine threw 35’5” in the shot put and 115’11” in the discus for 6th place. Holden Jackson threw a PR in shot put landing 32’1.5”. Ryder Michalek was able to compete in two field events before heading back to WS to be inducted into NHS. He landed 19’ 8.5” in the long jump in his first three attempts this year and in high jump he cleared 5’ 10” for 3rd place. Brock Krueger also cleared 5’10” in high jump for 2nd place and Brock landed 38’ 4” in triple jump.
Running the 2-mile relay in 8:49.48 was Sam Poncelow, Richard Cardona, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius to cross the line in 1st place. Haiden Boschee ran 14.01 for a PR and Holden Jackson ran 14.36 in the 100m dash. Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Damien Knippling, and Richard Cardona ran 1:43.75 in the 800m relay. Kohen Mebius ran two PRs, in his mile run with 5:59.14 and the 800m run in 2:49.02. The 400m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Holden Jackson, Haiden Boschee ran 51.6. Damien Knippling ran 1:03.68 for a PR. The medley relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Will Grohs, Sam Poncelow, Karter Mebius ran a season best of 3:50.90 to finish in 2nd place.
Running in the 200m dash we had Will Grohs, 25.98; Richard Cardona, 26.32; Damien Knippling 26.70; and Haiden Boschee, 29.65. The mile relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Sam Poncelow, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius put together an amazing run of 3:36.52 to cross in 1st place.
With another late afternoon track meet, we were able to attend the Lezlie Blasius Memorial Meet in Kimball on Friday, May 10, 2024. Avery Orth landed the shot put 40’ 8” to capture first place and improve the distance on her school record. Anna Arhart threw the shot put 31’ 10”. In discus, Avery threw 82’ 5”, Brooklyn Caffee threw 79’ 11” and Anna Arhart threw 79’ 3”. The 2-mile relay of Ella Kolousek, Lily Roesler, Alexis Roesler, and Masynn Mebius ran 12:52.72 to finish in 2nd place. Bailey Yost ran the 100m hurdles in 18.65. Abi Yost ran the 100m dash in 16.06 and Brooklyn Caffee ran 17.09. In the 800m relay we ran Alyssa Grohs, Kaebry Dixon, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek who ran 1:59.29 for 5th place. Abby Kolousek ran 6:02.07 and Masynn Mebius ran 6:37.28 in the mile run. The 400m relay of Bailey Yost, Abi Yost, Avery Orth, and Brooke Mohling ran 1:00.82. Lily Roesler ran 1:32.29 in the 400m dash. The medley relay of Bailey Yost, Mariah Messmer, Kenzie Kolousek, and Alyssa Grohs ran 4:38.52 for 3rd place and the season’s best.
Masynn Mebius ran 3:00 in the 800m run. Bailey Yost placed 6th in the 200m dash with 30.70. Brooke Mohling ran 32.90. Alexis Roesler ran 14:25.70 in the 2-mile run. The mile relay of Alyssa Grohs, Abby Kolousek, Mariah Messmer, and Kenzie Kolousek ran 4:33.59 for 4th place.
Grady Gran threw 36’ 8.5”, Robbie Hine threw 35’ 1.5”, and Holden Jackson threw 30’ 1.5” in the shot put. In the discus, Robbie threw 111’ 3”, Grady threw 88’ 2”, and Branden Flowers threw 85’ 4”. Brock Krueger was 5th in triple jump, with 37’ 4” and he was 3rd in high jump. Ryder Michalek was 2nd in high jump clearing 5’ 11” and 4th in long jump landing 18’ 10.25”.
The two-mile relay with Richard Cardona, Kohen Mebius, Sutten Jensen, and Damien Knippling ran 10:44.66 for 3rd place. Branden Flowers was 4th in the 110m hurdles crossing in 20.19. Ryder Michalek ran 12.29; Will Grohs was 12.42; and Holden Jackson ran 14.04 in the 100m dash. The 800m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Sam Poncelow, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius ran 1:37.97 for a season’s best and 2nd place.
Sutten Jensen ran 6:00.39 for a new PR in the mile run. The 400m relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Holden Jackson, Branden Flowers, and Will Grohs ran 52.04 for 5th place. Karter Mebius ran 53.04 for 3rd place and his season’s best. Damien Knippling finished the 400 in 1:05.58. The Medley Relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Richard Cardona, Ryder Michalek, Sam Poncelow ran 4:10.76 for 4th place. Kohen Mebius ran 2:50.56 in the 800m run. Will Grohs ran 26.46 in the 200m dash. The mile relay of Nathan Gaikowski, Sam Poncelow, Brock Krueger, and Karter Mebius ran 3:43.91 for 4th place.
Our next meet is Thursday, May 16, 2024, in Armour, SD. With the top 24 qualifying system and the three-day format at the state meet, we no longer have a region meet that athletes can get 1st or 2nd place at to automatically qualify for the state meet. It is a “last chance” meet. Javelin will be held in Corsica at 9am. The first session of the other field events will be starting at 10:30am and the second session will start at 11:15am. Running events will start on the track at 12:30pm. The 2024 State Track Meet will take place at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25, 2024.
