Area third through sixth graders will have a unique golf opportunity on Saturday, September 30 thanks to Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) senior Blake Larson. As part of his senior project, Larson is hosting a Youth Golf Camp at Springs Country Club in Wessington Springs. The third and fourth grade camp will be held from 9 - 10:30 a.m. and fifth and sixth graders can sign up for golf camp from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
“I figured I’m alright at golf and a lot of kids don’t get out there on the course as much as they want,” said Larson, who has earned a trip to the state golf tournament his freshman, sophomore and junior years, earning 5th, 21st and 4th place respectively. “If I can show them drills and teach them some fundamentals, I hope they‘ll want to get into golf more.”
Larson said he chose to start the camps at the third grade level because he feels it’s important for kids to learn “the right way” from the start.
“We’ll be doing a lot of putting and chipping drills. That’s the most important, if you can get those down,” he explained. “I’ll also be teaching them how to properly aim and line up to the ball when driving.”
Aiming for 10-15 students in each age group, Larson said he is receiving guidance from his project mentor, WSHS Golf Coach Regina Teveldal. Youth of all skill levels are welcome.
“Whether you’ve never picked up a club or you’ve played golf before, it’s for all levels,” he said. “Bring your own clubs if you have them but if you don’t have your own set, we will provide them for you.”
Larson asks that those interested in attending or anyone with questions contact him at (605) 770-8622.
