Giving Back to the Community: The Best Gifts are Those You Don’t Need to Unwrap

What began as a logistics conversation about storing the Wessington Springs United Church of Christ’s organ after the church’s closing in 2020, evolved into a thorough, detailed, mutually beneficial plan for two longtime Jerauld County entities to swap buildings on Main Street.

I didn’t give the marble-topped table tucked in the back of the True Dakotan much thought during the five years spanning between 2015 (the year I bought the newspaper business and the building that came with it) to 2020 (the year a fire in the basement led to a full building renovation).

Last Sunday, 4-H beef project enthusiasts packed the Jerauld-Buffalo County 4-H grounds on a beautiful, fall day on November 12, 2023, to participate in the 15th Annual Springs Showdown Calf Show.

Remembering the Dark Day of Nov. 22, 1963

I’ll never forget where I was when I learned about the terror attacks on the World Trade Center towers in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. I was a senior in college, walking to a Tuesday morning journalism class at South Dakota State University.

South Dakota beef industry sees potential in small, local meat plants

The small, somewhat worn meat processing plant in rural Wall seems an unlikely place for the birth of a new trend in South Dakota agriculture. But it could fundamentally change the economic landscape for the state's $1 billion annual beef cattle industry.
