Annual Brett Boomer Golf Tournament Raises Over $3,800 for Alpena Fire Department

The 13th Annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Classic, held Saturday, June 14, raised more than $3,800 to benefit the Alpena Volunteer Fire Department, continuing a tradition of supporting local emergency services while honoring the memory of Brett Boomer.

This year’s tournament drew around 50 golfers to Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron, where they were joined by family, friends, and volunteers on a sun-filled day that began with a breakfast buffet at the Red Hog Pub and Casino in Alpena.

The team of Matt Mikkelson and Jason Schley claimed the tournament title after a two-hole playoff against Logan Korkow and Alex Scheel, each team finishing regulation play 10 under par. Schley sank the winning putt to secure the victory and have their team’s name added to the Red Hog’s commemorative plaque.

Following the tournament, participants returned to Alpena for an evening celebration at the Red Hog, which included an appetizer buffet, door prizes donated by area businesses, and the event’s traditional toast— complete with apple pie shots and a round of “Ein Prosit,” a favorite German cheer.

In addition to dozens of inkind and prize donations, the event received generous financial contributions from supporters across the country, including individuals and families from South Dakota, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, and California.

Next year’s tournament is already on the calendar: the 14th Annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Classic is set for Saturday, June 13, 2026.
