September 25 Events Begin at Wessington Springs Health Care Campus and Continue at WSHS
It’s no secret that health care and agriculture are two vital pillars of the Jerauld County area and on September 25, two block parties will celebrate the impact both have had on area communities.
To kick off the communitycentered evening, a Block Party/ Community Appreciation event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the hospital/nursing home south parking lot. Immediately following, a Celebration of Agriculture event will be hosted by Wessington Springs High School beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Health Care Campus Block Party
Showcasing the unique partnerships enjoyed under one roof at the Wessington Springs Health Care Campus, the block party is sponsored by Horizon Health Care, Avera Weskota Memorial Hospital, Weskota Manor Avera, Jerauld County Office of Children and Family Services and Jerauld County Ambulance.
Local health care campus employees will be serving up a free meal consisting of hot dogs, burgers, chips, cookies and bottled water. Plenty of fun including music, kids’ games, door prizes and a new Horizon provider meet and greet will take place outdoors in the south parking lot. Flu shots will also be available alongside dental fluoride education. Seating will be limited so attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket to the celebration.
More information about the event can be found in this week’s print and e-edition on PAGE TWO
Celebration of Agriculture
Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) is hosting its first annual 'Celebration of Agriculture,' a free, public event for the community. The school's agricultural program was created in 1916, before the state’s first FFA chapter was even founded in 1928. The event celebrates educating students on the value of agriculture for well over 100 years.
A public reveal of professional artist and WSHS graduate Kenzee Schafer's mural will kick off the event at 6:30 p.m. The mural is painted on two 30-foot parallel walls outside of the ag shop, depicting images from the history and success of Wessington Springs High School's FFA Chapter. To further showcase the rich agricultural history of the area, displays from Jerauld/Buffalo 4-Hers, Jerauld County Pioneer Museum and the future Western Heritage Museum will also be on display.
At 7 p.m., BBQ sandwiches, chips and desserts will be available on Dakota Avenue west of the ag shop, where Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department will block off the area for the community’s second block party of the evening.
