Members and guests of Mitchell’s James Valley Community Center made a stop in Wessington Springs as part of their Fall Bus Tour on September 15.
The group of more than two dozen kicked off their tour of Springs at Sweet Grass, where owner Heather Larson talked about the transformation of the historic building into the current coffee shop and eatery. Following the stop on Main Street, they made their way to the 1905 Opera House where Brian Bergeleen treated them to musical entertainment, along with sharing the background of the historic building.
Tour Guide/Activities Coordinator Kim Burg pointed out other attractions including the Jerauld County Museum, United Methodist Church, Carnegie Library, Governor Vessey House, Sears and Roebuck House and many other local points of interest.
Susan Arnott delivered a thorough and interesting history of Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage where the group gathered for a photo (above), followed by lunch at the Springs Inn Café.
The group went on to Redfield and Huron where they toured a historic train depot, had a guided tour of Huron’s building murals, and ended at PopHuron Ice Cream in the family-owned Ice Cream restaurant’s renovated historic building. Seasonal motorcoach tours are given 3-4 times a year and are open to the public. Contact Kim Burg at James Valley Community Center at 605995-8048 for future bus tour information.
