A long weekend filled with fireworks, a parade, golf tournament, baseball and much more is right around the corner as folks in the Jerauld County area plan to celebrate Independence Day 2023. Many events are planned this year on July 1 - 4 to help locals and visitors alike commemorate the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.
Saturday, July 1
Kick off the Independence weekend with the 15th Annual Blue & Gold Golf Tournament at the Springs Country Club. The tournament is set to tee off at 10 a.m. More details on PAGE TWO
Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2
Golf game not quite to par? That’s okay — come out and enjoy two rodeo performances at the 20th Annual SDRA Foothills Rodeo held at 6 p.m. on Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday, and Slack at 9 a.m Sunday at the Jerauld County 4-H Grounds in Wessington Springs. Enjoy the pre-rodeo music by the Company Cowboys, kids mutton bustin’, crazy cowgirl trick rider, twelve rodeo events, and ending the night with everyone’s favorite, bull riding. Gather for a morning of friends and fellowship at the Community Church Service in the park at 11a.m.
Monday, July 3
Plan on catching a game of America’s favorite pastime as the Wessington Springs Teeners takes on MVP at home. Actions starts at 5:30 p.m with 14u and 16u to follow at David Jost Memorial Field. Later in the evening, enjoy some classic 4th of July delicacies at the 6th Annual Firemen’s Funfest at the Wessington Springs Fire Hall from 6-10 p.m. More on PAGE TWO
Tuesday, July 4
Start your Independence Day bright and early back at the Jerauld County 4-H Grounds by attending the Barrel Racing. Exhibitions are from 8-9:45 a.m, peewees at 10 a.m, the first run at 10:30 a.m, and the second run to follow. Cost is $27 per run.
Grab a lawn chair and get ready to enjoy the Fourth of July Parade, with this years theme “Cowboys & Freedom.” Set to depart on the parade route at 2 p.m, participants will line up on College Ave with the horses lined up in the back.
After the parade, swing by the 1905 Opera House and attend the Talent Show from 3 - 5 p.m.
Free will offering water and desserts will be served at intermission. Funds raised will be put towards the Eastern Star Educational Scholarships for local students.
At dusk, set your gaze to Lookout Hill for a spectacular fireworks show courtesy of Wessington Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
