School rec center/auxiliary gymnasium enters next phase of project construction

Community asked to stay behind orange construction fence

The rec center/auxiliary gymnasium project entered a new phase last week as C. Eagle Construction completed the dirt work required for the commencement of pier drilling.

Wessington Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Ormsmith urges community members to stay on the outside of the orange construction fencing (shown above) for their safety.

“Trenches for the piers can be anywhere from 30 to 40 feet deep,” Ormsmith said, explaining that the process includes drilling a large hole, making sure it’s the correct shape, then filling the trench with concrete right away. “If construction crews can’t fill the trench right away, a large, metal cover will be installed over it.”

The pier drilling portion of the project could take between three and four weeks, with next steps including taking delivery on pre-formed concrete that will connect the piers. To date, the project is still on schedule.

In a special meeting held February 17, the school board voted 5-1 to award the $5.27 million bid to C. Eagle Construction.

In addition to $1.5 million in capital outlay certificates, project funding includes $3 million currently in capital outlay funds already collected from taxpayers in the school’s account, $581,000 in Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funding from the federal government and $600,000 in funds raised by Build Springs.

Building completion is projected for Fall 2023.
