Celebrating memories of loved ones lost is the focus for two upcoming community events later in February. Spearheaded as senior projects for two Wessington Springs High School students later in February, both 12th graders said their goal is to lift up the community and honor special people who have passed away this past year.
Will’s Star Talent Show February 16, 3 p.m.
When reflecting on why he chose to host a community talent show for his senior project, Will Bruckner’s thoughts turn to his late grandfather, Jim Burg.
“With my grandfather recently passing away, I sang at his funeral,” said Buckner. “He liked me to sing and my mom likes me to sing. This time of year is glum and it seems like there’s been a lot of people lost in the past year. I thought that putting on an event like this and letting everyone showcase their talents would help bring the community together.”
Bruckner has put out a call for any and all talent to share their gifts at “Will’s Star Talent Show,” slated for February 16, 3 p.m. at the Opera House in Wessington Springs.
“The talent show is open to anyone and everyone,” he explained. “People can share any talent as long as it’s family friendly.”
Bruckner describes the free to enter and attend event as “something fun for the community to do as a whole.”
“I want to involve the community — my grandpa was really community focused and really loved the community here.”
To enter, call or text Bruckner at 605-353-5355.
“This community is very talented and I don’t think they get enough recognition,” he shared. “It’s a great opportunity to show everyone what you can do.”
Live Like Lisa Fundraiser February 18
To help honor and memorialize the late Lisa Bergeleen, former Wessington Springs Elementary School educator and number one fan of the Spartans, WSHS senior Taylor Braun is hosting a fundraiser for a permanent memorial for Bergeleen. Additional funds will also be used toward summer sports camps for the Spartans.
During the home double-header game on February 18, Braun will hold various fundraisers including chuck-a-duck, pop-a-shot, 50/50 drawing and quilt raffle. An FCCLA meal will also be served.
“Your support would be greatly appreciated in honoring our beloved Lisa Bergeleen,” Braun shared. “Thank you in advance for coming out to support my senior project.”
