Tenth Annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Alpena Volunteer Fire Department

The 10th Annual Boomer Memorial hosted nearly 70 golfers on Saturday, June 11 at the Springs Country Club.

“The weather was great, with just a brief sprinkle early, then low to mid 80s temps and a light breeze the rest of the day,” said Todd Boomer, event organizer. “Thanks to the Springs Country Club for helping arrange scheduling and golf carts for the event.”

Funds raised from the event totaled nearly $4,000 and has been donated to the Alpena Volunteer Fire Department.

Golfers received a special 10th Annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Classic t-shirt after enjoying a breakfast buffet in the morning at the Red Hog Pub and Casino in Alpena. After breakfast, the group made their way to Springs Country Club in the Red Hog Express bus. The large group golfed until around 4 p.m., then returned to the Red Hog for a large appetizer buffet.

“With almost 70 golfers, we had to get a little creative in team groupings,” laughed Boomer. “Most groups had 6-8 people broken into two teams each, with each team using playing best ball for all 18 holes. Our ‘Hydration Station’ team was roaming the course with beverages for all the thirsty golfers plus our buddy Bill Koncar played accordion on the patio behind the 9th green — you don’t see that every day!”

The winning fourperson team was made up of Logan Korkow, Alex Scheel, Riley Goeller and Benny Cohen with a score of 56.

Participants selected one of the door prizes, donated by many local businesses including Stan’s Inc., LSI, (Jack Links-Alpena) Alpena Co-op, American Bank & Trust, and the Red Hog Pub and Casino.

“We want to thank all those who made generous cash donations, proceeds from which go to benefit the Alpena Fire Department. Some of them were Stan’s Inc., LSI, Todd and Jill Swenson, (Wessington Springs) Terry and Brenna Smith, (Plymouth, MN) Calajean Kopfmann, (Huron) Ron and Kim Winter,

(Pleasanton, CA) Dave and Angie Uttecht, (Huron) Matt and Jenna Mikkelson, (Alpena) Les and Nancy Eckles, (Huron) Sean McDannel, (Wessington Springs), Justin Schuster, (Excelsior, MN) Todd and Kelli Korkow, (Huron) Peggy Morris, (Huron) Patsy Hoglo, (Alpena) to Kristi Hine and the Wessington Springs True Dakotan newspaper, for their continued support and coverage and to all of the Springs Country Club members that kindly donated the use of their golf carts for our event.

The 11th Annual Brett Boomer Memorial Golf Classic is slated for Saturday, June 10, 2023.
