The Wolsey-Wessington E-Sports team is off to a strong start in its second year of competition, continuing to build on the success of last season. Although the school does not yet have an E-sports lab, all matches are played remotely from home and the students are proving how powerful determination is.
Last year, all four team members qualified for the state tournament, including two state qualifiers in chess and two in Mario Kart, with the Mario Kart team finishing as state runnerup. This season brings two new players and renewed energy as the team competes in three titles: Mario Kart, chess, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, all of which are part of the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s sanctioned E-sports program.
Early-season highlights include several impressive victories:
• Connor Beals earned a chess win over Tripp-Delmont.
• Boston Grubham secured a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate win against White Lake.
• Team JK — Jeven Zerfoss and Kolten Sopko — captured a Mario Kart victory over Stevens High School.
• The Twins — Jayden Eggleston and Jackson Eggleston — claimed a Mario Kart win against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte.
