A century ago neighborhood ladies would collect news and submit it for publication in the weekly newspapers. They wrote about new babies, lost lives, weddings, barn raising, crop reports, weather, recipes, quilting bees and anything of interest in their area. After all of those years, Darleen Cuppy was our final correspondent.
One of the highlights of publishing the True Dakotan was our regular Monday morning greetings from “Grandma Dar.” She always had a smile, her hand-written weekly City at the Foothills column, time for a brief visit and sometimes homemade treats for the newspaper staff.
As the decades passed, she didn’t always drop by at the office, but would ask if someone could pick up her text. (Penny typed her column and appreciated her good penmanship).
Darlene was the perfect individual for the job. She and her beloved husband Howard, enjoyed school programs and sports events, baseball games, and visiting with the many, many people she called friends and family.
Wessington Springs lost a treasure that will be remembered for generations to come.
