Over the past year, True Dakotan readers have followed efforts by local trail enthusiasts to renovate the Old Grade Nature Trail, with volunteers pursuing grants and other funding for the project. That work continues, but a new grant opportunity has brought a future phase of the group’s vision to the forefront sooner than expected.
The Historic Wessington Springs Walking Route & Pedestrian Access Project was originally envisioned as a future phase of the larger trail effort, creating a paved route connecting neighborhoods with downtown, the school and health care campus while incorporating a self-guided tour of the community’s historic sites.
That timeline changed following a site visit by SDDOT Transportation Alternatives Program coordinator Logan Gran after the trail group submitted a letter of intent. Through Gran’s feedback and discussion during the visit, the group recognized that TAP funding could be a strong fit for the walking route because many neighborhoods currently lack safe pedestrian access to downtown and other vital services.
The group is now encouraging residents to contact Wessington Springs City Council members or attend the council meeting Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. to support the city providing the required 18.05% local match for the grant.
The federal program would cover 81.95% of eligible project costs. In-kind volunteer hours already contributed by the trail group could count toward the local match, potentially reducing the city’s cash contribution even further.
Trail supporters say that same local commitment would also strengthen their ability to secure more than $1.9 million in additional grant funding they are already pursuing for related trail improvements.
Supporters say the walking route would provide safer pedestrian access for children, older residents, people with disabilities and others who do not drive, while also offering health and tourism benefits.
