The Wessington Springs Spartans Girls Basketball team participated in the Parkston Classic on Thursday, December 30 and took on Dakota Valley. The game was close throughout, but Dakota Valley was able to increase the lead late and came away with a 68-57 victory over the Spartan girls.
The Spartans started off strong and took an early 8-2 lead, but Dakota Valley got things rolling and took a 16-10 lead after one quarter of play. Dakota Valley was able to increase that lead to 20-10 early in the 2nd quarter, but the Spartans then made their own run and were able to outscore Dakota Valley 19-10 for the rest of the quarter. The score was 30-29 at halftime. Scoring was hard to come by early in 3rd quarter, but Dakota Valley made a run at the end of the quarter and led 51-39 going into the 4th quarter. The Spartans were able to get the lead down to 7 points a few times in the 4th, but could get no closer and Dakota Valley was able to pull out the 68-57 victory. With the loss the Spartans fall to 2-2 on the season. Avery Orth led the Spartans with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Grohs had 13 points and five assists. Kirstie Munsen chipped in 11 points and five rebounds.
The Spartans have a busy schedule the first week of January. On January 3 the Spartans were scheduled to travel to Mitchell Christian for a make up game from December but it was postponed due to weather, date TBD. On January 5 the Spartans will be on the road at Sunshine Bible Academy. Finally, on January6theSpartanswill be at home vs Ethan. All of these games are girls/boys doubleheaders.
