“Team Estrellita” Mourns Loss of WSHS Student to Leukemia

An Alpena teen whose brave battle against Leukemia inspired her Wessington Springs High School (WSHS) classmates to form “Team Estrellita,” passed away last Friday at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Estrellita Cardona's full obituary and funeral service details can be found in this week’s print and e-edition on PAGE FIVE

Earlier this year, the WSHS freshman, 14-year-old Estrellita, had just picked out and purchased a gown for her upcoming quinceañara, immersing herself in planning for the cultural tradition that marks a girl’s 15th birthday celebration.

After starting to feel ill in February, Estrellita was originally diagnosed with a viral infection. When she continued to feel unwell, her parents sought additional care and blood work, which tragically revealed the diagnosis of leukemia.

“Team Estrellita” Continues

Upon learning about her diagnosis, Estrellita’s classmates at WSHS launched “Team Estrellita,” a selfdescribed “group of people who help raise awareness and funds for our friend and classmate.” In March and April, students held fundraising events at the middle school / high school and sold “Team Estrellita” t-shirts with all money raised going to Estrellita and her family as she underwent treatment.

Students also organized “Desserts from Star Bakers,” a moving silent auction of homemade desserts and continued to fundraise during prom-related events. To date, Junior High FCCLA has raised $5200.31, Student Council raised $2430 and the Junior Class/Prom fundraising efforts brought in $1300 for a grand total of $8939.31 for the Cardona family.

While the students grapple with the loss of their friend, fundraising events are currently on hold but youth have shared with FCCLA Advisor and Teacher Charlotte Mohling that they would like to continue planning additional events to help the Cardona family as they navigate this very difficult time.

A “Team Estrellita Benefit Account” has been established at American Bank & Trust in Wessington Springs. Contributions can be made by contacting the bank directly at 605-539-1222.

School Takes Steps to Help Students as They Mourn

On Monday, April 17, Wessington Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Ormsmith sent a letter to the school community, informing parents and families of Estrellita’s death. He also described the steps taken when school resumed Monday morning, including meeting with middle and high school students to share the news with them. Throughout the day Monday, pastors and counselors were available to the students in the high school building and school teachers and administration will continue to check in with students regularly.

A district-wide early release for students and staff is in place on Friday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m. to allow students and staff to attend the funeral and visitation services.

Funeral and Visitation Service Details

Funeral services for Estrellita will be held on Friday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Church in Huron. The Cardona family asks that those who purchased “Team Estrellita” t-shirts wear them to the funeral. A visitation will be held after the funeral at the Alpena Community Center beginning at 4 p.m. Per family tradition, the visitation will continue throughout the evening. On Saturday, April 22, burial service will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in Alpena, SD. The Cardona family asks that attendees dress in formal attire for the graveside service.

Schedule Accommodations for Students

In order to allow students to attend Estrellita’s services, Wessington Springs Drama Club’s “Guys and Dolls” performance dates have been changed to Thursday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. The Saturday afternoon matinee has been canceled. Additionally, the track and field team will not compete in Mt. Vernon Friday.

Continued Support Available for Students As the school community continues to cope with the loss of Estrellita, Dr. Ormsmith urges parents to reach out to the school if they feel their child needs additional support.

“If you feel your child is having difficulties dealing with this loss and may benefit from additional support, please feel free to contact the school counselor, or the school principal, so we can be aware of your child’s needs. We are also supported by local mental health professionals and can provide you with referrals as needed.”
