Take This Opportunity to Check Smoke Detectors
Homeowners are reminded to take care of their clocks and smoke detectors this weekend. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. local time Sunday, Nov. 5. That means pushing clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night.
Changing clocks around the house provides the perfect opportunity to adjust other items around the home, namely, batteries in the smoke detector.
The “Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries” campaign created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages homeowners to change their smoke detector batteries whenever they’re changing their clocks for DST twice a year.
Checking and changing smoke detector batteries is easy to do — the hard part is actually remembering to do so, which is why this handy pairing with Daylight Saving Time is ideal.
What exactly is DST?
Daylight saving time is the practice of moving clocks forward by one hour during summer months so daylight lasts longer into the evening. Most of North America and Europe follow the custom, while the majority of countries elsewhere, especially those close to the equator, do not.
